How to become motivated

19 Effective Tips on How to Become Motivated

1. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone

First and most importantly: If you want to grow as a person and as a character, you have to step out of your comfort zone. You can only reach your full potential by doing things you are afraid of. Many of us are afraid of public speaking, approaching the person we like and changing our job.

Why? Because we are too comfortable. Humans generally don’t like changes. But not changing anything isn’t a solution if you want to better your life. Once you step out of your normal comfort zone you will feel afraid and … then energized.

We have to be honest about what we want and take risks rather than lie to ourselves and make excuses to stay in our comfort zone.

Roy T. Bennett

Imagine being afraid to speak in front of many people, but once you do it one time, two times, three times, it becomes normal. Wouldn’t it be a great feeling to get rid of your fears and to get stronger and stronger with every fear you beat?

2. Write down your goals

By writing down your goals you get more committed towards these goals. Take a sheet of paper and write down all the goals you want to achieve by a certain day. You can also use the SMART goal system to specify what it is you want and to stay focused.

3. Concentrate on the positive

Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.
Focus on your character, not your reputation.
Focus on your blessings, not your misfortunes.

 Roy T. Bennett

Let go of all the negative thoughts and energies that might bother you. Focusing on negative things will decrease your motivation and your will to proceed.

How to become motivated again if you are feeling like giving up? Take some time out. Stay some hours for yourself, meditate, clear your energies and the next day will be a great opportunity to start reenergized.

4. Ban negative energy

Way too often we are surrounded by people who don’t believe in us and spread negative energy. Try to stay away from these people. You don’t need even more obstacles.

Also, try to avoid other sources of bad energies, like social media, TV and news.

5. Take successful people as an inspiring example

Try to watch people who already succeeded in what it is you want to do. This will give you the motivation and the feeling that you can achieve the same things.

We all need idols to look up to.

6. Take little steps

Set yourself small intermediate goals on your way to your goal and reward yourself for the small successes.

This will make your body release more dopamine. The more often the happiness hormone dopamine is released, the more the body will remember its own happiness drug and produce more of it again.

Continuos release of dopamine after achieving small goals will help you stay on track for your main goals.

7. Stay realistic

In order to stay motivated, you should find goals that are realistic to achieve under your circumstances. If you want for example to earn an extra amount of 50.000 dollars a year start small. Start by aiming for 5.000 Dollar extra.

8. And still… Reach for the stars

But: Don’t underestimate your potential. We decide who we want to be in life, we just need to be willing to work hard.

There is no heavier burden than an unfulfilled potential.

Charles Schulz

9. Use every day

Every single day has the potential to become the greatest day in your life. Isn’t this a fantastic thought?

Make each day your masterpiece. Why would you want to wait to get closer to your goal?

Nothing comes easy. Success doesn’t just drop on your lap. You have to go out and fight for it every day.

Dana White

10. Do the hard work first

Do the heavy and most important stuff in the morning. You want to spend most of your cognitive and emotional energy in the morning so you can do the easier things, that don’t need too much energy, in the afternoon.

11. Ask yourself uplifting questions

By asking yourself uplifting questions, you become more specific about what it is you want. Uplifting questions will help you stay motivated to better your life and to become the version of yourself that you’ve always dreamed about.

Some examples:

Are you living a meaningful life?

What are you committed to?

Would you rather have less work to do or more work you enjoy doing?

How would you describe yourself?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years ahead from now?

What would you do differently?

What makes you feel most empowered?

12. Imagine yourself achieving your goals

Imagine yourself walking they way your perfect YOU would walk. Imagine dressing like this version of yourself. Imagine talking, working, being happy and enjoying life like this perfect version of you would.

You can imagine yourself getting the A in the next exam, wearing a nice bikini on your body that just lost all the excess weight, or buying the new car you’ve always dreamed about.

Ask yourself: How would you feel? With whom would you celebrate your success?

13. “Fake it till you make it”

You must be the person you have never had the courage to be. Gradually, you will discover that you are that person, but until you can see this clearly, you must pretend and invent.

Paulo Coelho

14. Enjoy the process

Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.

Arthur Ashe

Don’t stress and rush yourself. Enjoy the process and the way you have to go. If you stress over your goal then you will make it harder to achieve. Celebrate each day of your journey!

15. Don’t compare yourself to others

Stop comparing yourself to others. There will always be someone who is more beautiful, smart, fast, intelligent or charismatic than you.

Start creating your own measures of success. Your improvements are the measures you should pay attention to.

With that said: You should reduce the time you spend on social media or follow people who are good for your self-esteem.

16. Write a success diary

This is an important tip on how to become motivated.

Buy a diary and write down every success you achieved.

Over time this diary will become your personal place of achievements and positive energy. Whenever you need motivation or some uplift you can go and read about all the success you already accomplished.

17. Do some research

Do some research about the way you have to go. Search for experiences from other people.

This will help you prepare yourself emotionally for the process and possible obstacles you have to face.

18. Make deals with yourself

You can make deals with yourself that will keep you committed to your goals!

For example, you could say “When I am done reading the next 20 pages of my preparation book for university I can go for coffee with my best friend”.
