The root chakra is the first chakra and is based on the element earth. Even though more attention is often paid to the higher chakras, the opening, healing, and balancing of the root chakra is one of the most important steps in your spiritual development. The root chakra gives us the stability, support, and basis for spiritual evolution as an incarnated soul. It is not possible to maintain a high level of vibration as long as there is a dysfunction in the root chakra – spiritual breakdowns are pre-programmed. Also, the Kundalini energy cannot rise as long as the root chakra has not been opened and the nervous system has been strengthened by a well functioning and grounding root chakra. The root chakra also connects us to the body, our vitality, and the earth energies. In this post, I’ll present you 6 powerful ways how you can heal and balance your root chakra!

What are the functions and behavioral characteristics of the root chakra?

The main aspect of the root chakra is security and fear of life. The opening of the root chakra means healing the existential fear that something bad might happen.

A blocked or dysfunctional root chakra leads to an attempt to make life and all circumstances predictable and stable.

Only through an open and balanced root chakra is it possible for us to meet the flow of life without fear. Neither the world nor life is safe and secure so you want to reach a state of “Ok, whatever it is, I can handle it, I will survive”.

Healing and balancing the root chakra means to develop your own inner security – which is independent of external circumstances and experiences.

In connection to the root chakra, you probably have heard the word “grounding“. Grounding actually means an energetic connection to the earth, but the term is also often used for the ability to be completely in the body.

Many people have a tendency to live outside their bodies, often without even noticing it.

Such people are often clumsy or nervous.

One common reason for this is an insufficiently opened root chakra, which prevents the energy from really flowing into the physical body.

An opened and balanced root chakra leads to a significant increase in presence, vitality, and stability.

What are the signs of an opened and balanced root chakra?

  • You feel stable, physically robust and healthy
  • You trust in the rhythms and cycles of life and you feel deeply connected to Mother Earth and nature and to your own body
  • Your trust is so big that you can relax and rest at the end of the day, knowing that you have a secure financial basis and that you are exactly where you need to be in life
  • You know that you are welcome and secure here on earth and that you have a right to live and be cared for here
  • Generally you feel satisfied with your life and career

If you can’t find yourself in these signs or you feel blockages it is time for you to heal and balance your root chakra!

4 Root Chakra Meditation

When it comes to healing or opening the root chakra, root chakra meditation is also highly effective.

Chakra meditation techniques are similar to normal meditation techniques but focus on a specific area of the body.

Try this simple but effective root chakra meditation you can do whenever you have 3-5 minutes:

  1. Sit with your back straight and your shoulders falling backward. Try to relax all muscles while closing your eyes and taking a deep breath.

2. Breathe in through the nose, pull the breath as deeply as possible into the body, and exhale through the mouth.

3. Focus your attention on the position of the root chakra. Notice if you feel any tension.

4. Since the root chakra resonates with the color red, imagine a red light at the base of your spine. This glow expands slowly and the whole chakra region becomes pleasantly warm and relaxed. Try to clear your root chakra with this red, glowing light.
