What Is the Heart Chakra (Anahata Chakra)?

The Heart Chakra, known as Anahata in Sanskrit, is the fourth of the seven Chakras in the body. It is the energy center that is where love is generated.

It is the connection between the three lower, earthly chakras, which represent your physical body and sensory experiences, and the three upper, spiritual chakras, which are more related to your intuition, mind, and soul.

Thus, Anahata Chakra is the bridge and balance point between body and mind, between heaven and earth.

Only when your Heart Chakra is open, you can actually work on the higher Chakras.

When the Heart Chakra is in alignment and balanced you will feel great amounts of self-love and compassion for others. Love is the highest vibration that we can experience in this world and so the Heart Chakra is of great importance.

The Heart Chakra is located in the center of the chest and is represented by the color green. This Chakra should be nurtured, cherished, and cleansed regularly to keep it in optimal condition.

11 Blocked And Overactive Chakra Symptoms

When our Heart Chakra is out of sorts we can experience physical and emotional ailments. If we do not take care of Anahata the negative energy in this center will manifest in various ways throughout our being.

The following are 11 signs of issues within our Heart Chakra:

  1. Hating the idea of being alone
  2. Giving your love away to people who do not deserve it
  3. Holding on to resentment
  4. Feeling bitter about other people’s love lives
  5. Struggling to hold on to loving relationships
  6. Exhibiting codependent tendencies
  7. Feeling untrustworthy of others
  8. Finding it hard to feel empathy
  9. Problems with the lungs
  10. Judging people harshly
  11. A constant feeling of loneliness
  12. Heart-related issues

The Benefits Of An Activated Heart Chakra

On a mental level, Anahata stands for giving and sharing without asking for anything in return.

It stands for an awareness of inner abundance and the ability to recognize where the boundaries are in order to protect yourself.

On an emotional level, the Anahata Chakra stands for the ability to love yourself, to give and receive love, kindness and compassion for yourself and also for others.

This is why the Heart Chakra is important to develop deep, trusting relationships.

The fourth chakra also represents trust in your inner compass, your intuition.

Anahata helps you to accept things as they are and to live in a state of balance – with yourself, but also with your environment.

With a balanced Anahata Chakra, you will feel surrounded by love, compassion, and joy and be connected to the world.

Cleansing And Healing Your Heart Chakra: 10 Effective Ways

1. Work With Emotional Trauma

Possible traumas that block the heart chakra could have emerged, for example, from rejection, abandonment, betrayal, cheating, constant criticism, deaths, separation, a loveless environment, or abuse.

The traumas of the heart are less emotional in nature, such as with the Sacral Chakra, but usually involve truly existential, almost soul pain.

Other important themes are destroyed trust in the universe and deep-seated resentment that requires forgiveness.

2. Shadow Work

Shadow work is the process of exploring rejected aspects, thoughts, feelings, and characteristics of ourselves that we keep hidden in our subconscious out of fear.

But even in our subconscious, these isolated aspects affect our lives.

Through them, we tend to emotionally exaggerated reactions. These reactions are usually negative and often concern other people in our lives.

With shadow work, we try to integrate the separated aspects of ourselves in order to heal.

In the process of healing, you will also notice that you respond in a different way to others and start to perceive more positive rather than negative feelings.

You will eventually develop more love and understanding for others. One reason for this is that you learn to integrate, accept and embrace your own supposedly negative aspects.

This also supports the cleansing and healing of your Heart Chakra.

3. Empathy

For the cleansing of your heart chakra, it is important that you practice empathy. Often we judge others too quickly and get caught up in negative emotions and feelings.

We usually don’t know what makes the other person do what they do.
Maybe you met a very unfriendly person today, to whom you also reacted negatively.

But just think about this: what if this person just had the worst day of their life and that’s why they were (unintentionally) so unfriendly? In what kind of mood would you be if you were in their place?

4. Energetic Healing

Energetic healing is a technique that is thousands of years old and was already practiced in ancient Egypt. Energetic healing brings the energy to vibrate through various methods.

For example, with Reiki energy can be transferred by the application of hands, which changes the vibration pattern at that location.

With various techniques of energetic healing blockages in one’s energy system can be released.

5. Exploring Karmic Blockages

Past life regressions and hypnosis can help you to discover, explore and change traumas in buried or hidden parts of your present life (or the prenatal phase of your life).

There can be concealed causes for all kinds of psychological difficulties, which we can’t reach with our mind or conscious memory.

The exploration of karmic blockages affecting the Heart Chakra can help to contribute to its cleansing and healing.

6. Bija Mantra

Bija mantras are sounds that are associated with the Chakras. Each mantra connects with the energy of the Chakra and helps to clear any blockages and corrects imbalances.

Yam is the Bija mantra for the Heart, Anahata, Chakra. It promotes love, forgiveness, acceptance, and compassion.

To use the mantra, meditate while focusing on your Heart Chakra and chant the word yam.

Let it reverberate around your heart center. Allow it to cleanse any negative vibrations from your Heart Chakra.

7. Healing Affirmations

Reciting purposeful and positive affirmations can cleanse your Heart Chakra and raise your vibration.

When you focus your intention on the energy within this space it will unleash anything that you are holding inside.

Releasing toxic vibrations can be achieved with the right affirmations.

Here are some of my favorite examples:

  • I deserve love
  • I forgive myself and others
  • The energy in my hearts center is balanced and full of loving energy
  • I am open to love
  • My heart is healed
  • I have unlimited love to give
  • I choose gratitude, joy, and compassion
  • I have an immense amount of empathy toward others
  • My heart is full of love
  • I accept myself for who I am
